Digital – Does it Compliment or Supplement your media offering?

Lets hear the good news for 2012. Digital is here to stay. And increasingly its getting grained into every possible form of media. From print to electronic, digital is taking over. Social TV is expected to be the thing to watch out for in 2012.

The ingraining of digital is also opening numerous new opportunities for media service providers to add a new revenue stream to their existing business model. Advertising agencies are taking forward digital branding into the social media world. Traditional digital agencies are moving beyond digital development & campaign management to delivering social media campaigns , albeit not with the same success rate as traditional media campaigns. PR agencies are staking their claim on social media by dishing constant reminders that they are the true owners of client conversations. …more

Why CEO’s are Absent from Social Media

In the recent times, there is an increasing buzz about the CEO & his / her social media presence. The buzz is about how the CEO & his office are missing the trick by their absence on social media platforms. These recent 2 articles here & here highlight the lack of CEO presence online & how at times the CEO’s office is doing catching up in case of an online crisis.

This post is based on my own experiences & some insights & understanding on the issue.

Why CEO’s or the organizations are not jumping into building his / her social media presence.

Reason 1 : The CEO is Media Shy

Ask yourself this question. How many CEO’s you know of out of Fortune 100 companies? You know the answer. Not many. The CEO is not a public person & would let the others in the company do the talking. But ironically in this case, neither the CEO, nor the other person developes a social media presence for themselves, thus exposing the organization & themselves to the risk of social media crisis.

Reason 2 : The corporate communication doesn’t think of CEO PR

It may sound absurd but ask a corporate communication manager on his companies CEO’s PR strategy & you will get a sense of it. The biggest of the biggest organization will admit that the CEO PR strategy is not a priority till the time the CEO himself pushes for it. CEO social media presence thus falls into the same trap. Lack of focus on building the CEO presence.

Reason 3 : CEO doesn’t think Social Media is serious business

For the CEO, social media is another buzz word. He may focus on the tradional form of media, but neither him nor the organization thinks that it is prudent to invest in social media. Building the CEO’s social media presence for them is not even on the radar.

The other aspects like content generation, dedicated team for CEO office take a back seat in light of above reasons. It is important that organizations realize that they need an active & an engaging face that compliments the dynamics of today social media environment & the communication objectives.

What Next?

During the initial days of Social Media euphoria in India, we had seen brands create their social media presence across platforms. In more than 1 situation, the tact was to employ a campaign based approach & gather fans / followers etc on your social media assets. The campaign burst allowed the brand to have a sizeable base of fans & followers. But once the campaign is over, what do you do with these fans & followers? A question that I have repeatedly heard in recent times. So I have put together this small deck sharing my thoughts on activities that brands can execute to ensure a sustained engagement with their fans & followers.

Notes on the Move, Simplified

A few days ago, Atul Chitnis talked about Notational Velocity and SimpleNote App on Twitter. Evernote is a good application and service but I had been looking for something that allowed me to store my notes, taken on the move, in HTML on a local machine. It was one of those passive thoughts that, perhaps, also resulted in me not purchasing the premium edition.

My notes are mostly observations or comments that I feel might be useful at a later stage. I have written in the built-in application of my various phones or saved comments in draft mode of the email application. Evernote was always a choice on the phone and desktop but never really used extensively. There is still a lot of data in this service that i needed to migrate. …more

If this is the present then what could be the future?

A lot of events happen over spaces like Facebook, Twitter. Events such as our reunion with our schoolmates after long years, knowing about them and their work and life in just few minutes and so on. Imagine this in a traditional offline meet up, where we would exchange number of questions and answers just to get some basic information like contacts, photos, other memories. On the other hand you might even come to know information which you may or may not want to know. I guess I will stop here on this.

If we look at other events around us, social media is providing us with the opportunity to speak our minds, be communicative, and allow us to express our mind, feelings and emotions. In short it has made us all conversationalists, whether we are debating our views on various topics or sharing ideas and of course having fun by playing games, watching videos etc. …more
